I spent the entire weekend at The Goodwood Revival Motoring/Aviation/Nostalgia event. It's like stepping back in time. Anyhow, The quality of light available varied enormously. Below are a couple of examples.
Shot on Friday this image of The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight was lit beautifully by the setting sun, almost from below given that the aircraft were banking to starboard. Most of the day had been overcast but the clouds parted slightly towards the end of the day. It was worth the wait.
Fast forward to Sunday and, well, the difference is clear. Drab featureless background, no direct light whatsoever. To even render as much detail as this (and it isn't much) I've had to push this image quite hard in Photoshop. But for the fact that the aircraft at the front is very rare, I would have left the camera in the bag.
Down on the racetrack a similar light made proceedings a little dull from a photographic perspective. However, given the historic nature of the event it is possible to make something a little different.
The flat, almost colourless scene as captured by the limited capabilities of camera and lens.
A similar image with a little post processing. It works given the dated subject matter. It probably would not look quite right with modern Formula 1 cars.
